Sunil Chhetri's brace lifts India 2-0 vs Bangladesh in a climacteric qualifier

India takes 3 points home in a must-win FIFA World Cup qualifier defeating Bangladesh 2-0 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha with Sunil Chhetri's brace after a goalless first half. The blues reserved their first win after two years to continue in the race for reaching AFC Asian Cup in 2023. They have now sprung to third place in Group E collecting 6 points from seven matches. An eleven match winless run is over and all thanks to the captain.

The four fourth-place finishers in each of the eight groups directly get qualified for the third round for the Asian Cup qualifiers. Six teams were ahead of India with more points which made it important for the Blue Tigers to win this match desperately or go home without any hope for the automatic berth in the third round.

Started with Gurpreet Singh, Subhash Bose, Sandesh Jhingan, Chinglensana Singh, Glan Martin's, Brandon Fernandes, Bipin Singh, Suresh Singh, Manvir Singh, Udanta Singh and Sunil Chhetri the captain, Blues dominated the first half but that couldn't help them win points against the opponent's goalkeeper. The captain puts Indians ahead of Bangladesh with his minute 79' running header from Ashique's brilliant cross and minutes 90+2' brace of Suresh Wangjam's cutback.

The header of Captain was his team's first goal from open play in the qualifier. He has now scored five goals against the neighbour Bangladesh in their five meetings. The last time Indian's grabbed their win was in November 2015 against Guam with a 1-0 lead in a 2018 World Cup qualifier round game in Bangalore.
